They bounded forwards towards the next line of trees. Without warning, a muzzle flash from the tree line, then another, announced the next German ambush. Moments later, Corporal O’Connor came on the radio announcing that he’d been hit. Lee glanced over to see O’Connor’s tank slewing to the right, its left track unspooling. Switching to intercom, Lee shouted, ‘Driver halt!’. He peered through his binoculars, seeking the source of the muzzle flash. Two more muzzle flashes from the tree line and a swoosh near his head. One of the enemy tanks had him in its sights and almost had the range. From the corner of his eye he saw O’Connor’s crew bailing out. The other round had hit the stricken Comet.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eHe spotted one of the tanks behind the muzzle flash. ‘Target, Tank, 1 o’clock, Fire!’ he ordered. The turret swung to the left, there was a pause, then the gunner fired. Boom!\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eSmoke billowed over the trees - a hit! One down, one more to go. Two overlapping crashes told him that the troop’s other two tanks were engaging the other tank. On cue the green Brit tanks began rolling through the field straight toward von Luck. PaK shells whizzed out blindly hitting nothing. Fire,” he orders.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eThe heavy Panther rocks back with a roar as the 7.5cm round flies towards its target. The lead M4 Sherman tank explodes in a dazzling display of sparks, even before the dust from the muzzle blast clears. Time stands still as the loader rams round after round in the smoking breech, each shot rocking their tank as enemy tank after tank explodes just to his front. Return shots bounce off the thick steel of the Panther, the American guns unable to score a kill. Carefully, he pulls back to the next tree, resuming the fight from there.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eHearing the scream of aircraft engines in a steep dive, Barkmann drops into the turret, just as the tank is lifted into the air on the blast of the first bomb. The Panther is sprayed with bomb fragments. Moans come from his headphones and daylight streams through a crack in the side of the tank.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Heinz,” Barkmann calls to his driver, his voice lost in the ringing of his ears, “Can we still move? Can you get us out of here?”\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eAs the Panther tank’s fire slackens, the American fire redoubles. A round clangs against the armour. Another smashes the track damaged by the bomb, forcing 424 to slew violently to the left. Feldwebel Klienberg and his Tiger had much in common. \u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eNow, as the Reich becomes desperate for panzers and troops trained to use them, Klienberg found himself leading a platoon of his trainees with a motley assortment of Tigers. The workshop had done their best to get them in working order and Klienberg had made sure each tank was commanded by the more promising of his trainees. His platoon of three old Tigers had been assigned to support the defence of a small town south of their training area.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eHis young driver (supposedly 18, but Klienberg suspected he was somewhat younger) revved the engine and the Tiger shuddered forward again, stopping against a short brick wall. The wall bulged slightly and some bricks tumbled off the top row. The other two Tigers lined up along the wall the made up the courtyard of a warehouse at the edge of the town. They faced the road and fields from where they expected the attack to come.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eHis own Tiger was dark yellow with a faded green striped camouflage, an older model with the big boxy cupola. One of his other Tigers was newer, but sported a new gun barrel still in oxide red, with a mismatched three colour camouflage on the turret and hull, as the turret had obviously come from another tank. The last tank was just plain dark yellow, but oddly about half of the road wheels were either brown or green.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eIt was as the day’s light was beginning to fade that the sound of battle began to get closer. A few minutes later an artillery bombardment began falling on the town, centred on the town hall, a few hundred metres behind Klienberg’s position. As the rumble of the bombardment ceased, grenadiers started to trickle across the fields, making their way towards the town. The first grenadiers began to reach the courtyard walls when a line of tanks appeared though the treeline on the far side of the fields.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003e“Feuer frei!” shouts Klienberg, instructing his Tiger commanders to fire at will. His own gunner, a veteran like himself, had already lined-up one of the enemy tanks and sent its doom down range. The shot was greeted with a flash and erupting flames as the olive green tank began to burn.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eReturn fire saw the courtyard explode in dust and brick fragments. Klienberg tapped his gunner’s shoulder in acknowledgment of his good shooting before directing him to the next target, a tank advancing across the fields.\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eKlienberg smiled.
